About WHAT LARKS!

What Larks! are a 3/4/5-part female a cappella group who sing mainly traditional songs with lots of sing-along choruses. We met originally via social media & the Grove Folk Club in Leeds.

What Larks! were Sue Thornton & Heather Woodhead, with Lillian Grace and Anne Curran, but have recently joined with Fran Hughes.

  • Sue Thornton lives in Castleford and often performs with her husband Mark Ludlow.

  • Heather Woodhead, who helps run the Grove Folk Club in Leeds, is also a singer, songwriter & guitarist and has released 4 solo albums.

  • Fran Hughes also helps run the Grove Folk Club, sings and plays a 12-string guitar.

  •  Lilian Grace plays concertina & guitar and finished her folk degree at Leeds conservatoire in 2020. She released her 1st full solo album in 2023.

  • Anne Curran lives in Wakefield and is a solo singer and guitarist.

  •

Recent bookings have included Morley Folk Club, Folk at the Grove, The Great North Folk Festival, Moira Folk Festival & Filey Folk Festival. We are looking forward to singing at the Beggars Folk Club in 2026.
